Wide Format Printer Help Needed!!

Postby Kiko » October 23rd, 2010, 9:14 pm

Hi All,

I've been looking to get a wide format inkjet printer so I can work larger. The budget dictates that I find a used one, so have been browsing the usual sites looking for a decent printer, not only for the sandcarving biz, but to do photographic prints, banners, etc. I'm starting to formally study graphic design, so that factors in too.

Ok, here's the rub....Most that are within my budget so far are 4-6 years old, and mention that they run on a Windows platform, although they connect via USB (probably 1.0). Yet the Xerox 8142 (see link below) mentions that it interfaces with Mac Quickdraw. Huh? Can someone explain what's up with that, and maybe suggest a Mac friendly older wide format? I like a lot of the features of the 8142, but it HAS to interface with the Mac. I'm using an iMac running OS 10.5.8.. Thoughts??? Thanks, Kiko :dunno:

You might able to run it using GUTENPRINT / GIMP PRINT. You will need to do a little investigating to see if that large printer is supported....
I think the large printers run with a whole different technology, but honestly, I am currently not really up on all that as I have not run CAD plots/prints since 1999.

It is possible you could find some of the help you are needing at a forum that is for MAc based architectural CAD ((ARCHICAD and VECTORWORKS are at the forefront)), as they use large format printers, but really, I would go to a printing/graphics forum and ask around.

Check out a screenprinting forum. Screen printers originally developed the methods we use for printing on films that are used for developing the screens or in our case the washout/rm type films. For example FilmDirectOnline.Com uses printers that can print on accuart type film up to 50" wide. I believe they use Epson Printers. I use Screenprinting film to print out all my artwork for washout or RM films. They also offer rolls and large size sheets of the accuart type film.

Additionally for those who will do large artwork once in awhile they offer a printing service to print out your artwork up to that size at a reasonable price if you don't have a printer to print the large artwork.

Hi Kevin,

You say you use screen printing film for your RM, is it the same thing as AccuArt or AccuBlack just a different name? I'm also curious how it compares in price to the Accu products.

Kelly...It is similar if not the same (As far as I know). At least it works the same. The price is $45 for 100 sheets (8.5x11) to $75 for 13"x100' roll. I think I originally paid $.85/sheet for 8.5x11 sheets at SCM.

I have not used FimDirectOnline films yet - just their inks. I do use the screenprinting films I received elswhere (I think Ryonet) for what we do sandcarving wise. I have also used the film I received from SCM to do screenprinting - so they seem interchangable.

Thanks Kevin,

I'll keep that in mind the next time I need to order. Of course I'll probably forget by then, which thread it was in, so I'm sure I'll be quizzing you!
