Master Bath project

Postby KBrownlee » August 3rd, 2010, 5:33 pm

Hey Everyone!
Here's the latest update on the progress of the GREAT (LOL) master bath project that I asked for some graphics help on a couple of weeks ago. Jess gave us that great IG informational..I measured for the glass, talked it over with DH, and picked up the phone to order the glass. Then DH realized where the faucet for the bath tub is gives us 1/4" of space between the handles and the wall. :E: Certainly not enough to clear the IG unit that we were thinking about. :C:
SO, more thought and more time in the tile aisle at Lowe's and Home Depot has given us an option...

Tile around the tub just high enough to clear the handles with some really nice looking tile then put the glass mural above it.

DH doesn't like tile that much. I can't think of another solution unless we put a formica panel or something like that up.

Do ya'll have another sugestion?

Thanks in advance.

Kerri-
The only thing I would suggest, if you use tile, do not use grout between the tile & the glass. They have a differing coefficient of expansion, and you might risk breakage, Use something semi-flexible.

Jess,
DH wants to use a silicon sealant of some sort. How would that work?

Kerri-
If it's the right Silicone, (Tub & Tile), and applied as directed, it will work great. Don't buy the cheap stuff, or you will be cutting it out & replacing it every few years. Dow-Corning makes some of the best.

CHEAP!!!!! CHEAP!!!!! :E:

Oh Jess, you know me too well!
No, for this rebuild we are using the best that we can afford... which isn't top of the line, but not the bottom of the line either.

Thanks :toh:

I would suggest glass tiles ... glass to glass is a great way to go and you
don't have a co-efficiency problem with the grout. The only issue with glass
tiles is ... if they don't have a solid surface on the back ... you have to
set them differently. Can be a royal pain. We buy the good tiles, pay more
and they are worth it. I won't set the others.

Formica is rather a cheap looking way to go and not very attractive.

I'm really not being a smart a-- here but have spent most of my life as a
general contractor building new and remodeling not very attractive re-dos.

If you're going to do it ... do it right the first time and get the WOW look.

Thanks Bernie, IMHO you are not being a smart a**. I agree, I want it done correctly and get a WOW look at the same time.

I don't ask for much. I have looked at the glass tiles and they are in the running for the final choices. The tiles will be mounted on regular backer board that is used in bathrooms, I think that it is water resistant backer board :dunno:
