Optimizing your web site for portable devise

Postby Roderick » September 30th, 2012, 6:51 pm

Sorry for the long title.
Anyone have any experience with Optimizing your web site for portable devises like IPhones and other portable devises?
I am thinking of having a condensed version (Optimized) of my web site created so it is alot easyier to read with a phone.

Thanks in advance

Roderick,

You can create the site yourself. I would recommend a domain name with the '.mobi' extension. The key is to make your pages centered and only 320 pixels wide.

I have an industry friend who used a company name Adverscan to create her mobile device site. http://www.5starawards.mobi/

Adverscan can be found at http://www.adverscan.com/. I thought their program was very reasonable.

David,
I don't want to have another web site domain. I am just simpliy trying to find out if people think it would be helpful to have a web site optimized for mobile devises.

I haven't heard that it takes anything different to optimize a site for a mobile device search versus a standard search. I don't know why you would want to bother if you aren't going to set up a site to or series of pages that are formatted to display properly on a mobile device. Maybe I am missing something, which is very possible. I'm the type of person who could live perfectly fine without a cell phone. I could count on one hand the number of text messages I have sent in the last 10 years.

FYI, I got to thinking when this came up and found a number of sites that allow you to test your site (how it will view) with different mobile devices. For instance, here's a good one.

PS CS2, CD X4, Acer laptop, Canon 700F scanner, HP laserjet 1600 printer, Epson Stylus 1400 printer, Intuos 4 tablet, Letralite, Summa D610 plotter, 2 cabinets, 2 pressure pots, 60 gallon air compressor, Fuji S8100 DSLR.

Kelly,

That and other sites are a little misleading because we are looking at them in a much, much higher resolution than a smart phone display. The real test is looking at your site on a smart phone.

I am not smart enough to know how to use a smart phone.
